Parallel Hierarchical Global Illumination

چکیده
This paper presents an algorithm that solves the Ren dering Equation to any desired accuracy, and can be run in parallel on distributed memory or shared memory com puter systems with excellent scaling properties. It appears superior in both speed and physical correctness to recent published methods involving bidirectional ray tracing or hybrid treatments of diffuse and specular surfaces. Like "progressive radiosity" methods, it dynamically refines the geometry decomposition where required, but does so without the excessive storage requirements for "ray histories."

Spatial Partitioning For Hierarchical Radiosity
This work resides around the interface of two disciplines in computer science: computer graphics (global illumination) and parallel computing (dynamic partitioning). On the one hand an efficient algorithm for global illumination simulation – hierarchical radiosity – is examined with respect to its capability of being parallelized. On the other hand we develop a general tool T for the dynamic pa...
متن کاملParallel Hierarchical Radiosity: The PIT Approach
Radiosity is a method to compute the global illumination of a scene characterized by high computational requirements. To reduce this complexity, hierarchical radiosity decomposes the scene into a hierarchy of patches and computes the light exchange at different levels, according to the distance between patches and/or to the amount of light emitted by the patches. A distributed memory implementa...
متن کاملScalability and Granularity Issues of the Hierarchical Radiosity Method
The radiosity method is a global illumination method from computer graphics to visualize light in scenes of diiuse objects within an enclosure. The hierarchical radiosity method reduces the problem size considerably but results in a highly irregular algorithm which makes a parallel implementation more diicult. We investigate a task-oriented shared memory implementation and present optimizations...
متن کاملMeshless Hierarchical Radiosity on the GPU
Meshless radiosity [1, 2] is a radiosity method that is based on a point-based and hierarchical discretization of the scene. This better decouples the runtime complexity from the geometric complexity of the scene and allows for an adaptive high-quality simulation of the diffuse global light transport. In this paper, we analyze the bottlenecks of this approach and examine the possibilities for a...
متن کاملA Hierarchical Algorithm for Radiosity Daylighting
A new daylight simulation method for radiosity environments is presented. Daylight illumination is transported in a first step where sun and sky are represented as a set of directional sources. Light is transported using parallel projections of these sources. The scene mesh is adaptively subdivided using energy and visibility criteria obtained from a extended scan-line algorithm that computes a...
متن کاملEfficient Parallel Refinement for Hierarchical Radiosity on a DSM computer
We introduce a simple, yet efficient extension to the hierarchical radiosity algorithm for the simulation of global illumination, taking advantage of a distributed shared memory (DSM) parallel architecture. Our task definition is based on a very fine grain decomposition of the refinement process at the level of individual pairs of hierarchical elements, therefore allowing a very simple implemen...
